After three consecutive months of highs, the US dollar dropped and posted 2.6% fall for October. On Friday (Oct. 30) the US dollar stood at R$3.863, up 0.23%.
The exchange fluctuated a lot throughout the day, as it usually occurs on the month's last business day, because investors try to affect the rate used by Central Bank (BC) to work off the government debt tied to the dollar.
On Thursday, the BC renewed currency swap contracts with expiration date in November. Today, the monetary authority announced that, from Tuesday (Nov. 2), they will do the same for contracts with expiration date in December.
Currency swap contracts work as transactions of dollar sales in future market, and they help push down the currency's price, because they transfer part of the demand for US dollar from the present to the future. By renewing contracts, the BC does not bid for new contracts, they only postpone the expiration date of existing contracts.
