Brazil’s president-elect resumes gov’t transition engagements Monday

The pension reform is expected among the topics to be discussed

Brazil’s President-Elect Jair Bolsonaro is coming to Brasília next Monday (Nov. 12) to resume the engagements of the government transition. His schedule is still being put together. He is expected to get on board at 7 am at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão Airport.

Next week, in addition to the discussion on the reform in the country’s pension system, a meeting has been scheduled with Tereza Cristina, lawmaker and chairwoman of the lower house’s Parliamentary Agricultural Front, tapped as Bolsonaro’s agriculture minister. Talks should include the priorities and format to be adopted by the ministry. Whether fields like fishing and family agriculture will be incorporated into the ministry also remains to be decided.

On Wednesday (Nov. 14), on the eve of Brazil’s Proclamation of the Republic day, Bolsonaro will meet with all 27 governors, both elected and re-elected, for a first talk. In addition to hearing the demands and suggestions from the state leaders, Bolsonaro is expected to unveil his proposal for a national pact, including initiatives aimed at privatization and red tape reduction.

Also expected to attend is economist Paulo Guedes, Bolsonaro’s future head of the Minister of the Economy—to be created after a merger of the ministries of Finance; Planning; and Industry, Foreign Trade and Services.

Investment

On his Twitter page, the president-elect said that large businesses expressed interest in investing in the country after the elections.

“After the elections, major companies announced millions in investment in Brazil for the coming years. It’s just the beginning! Trade with the whole world with no ideological bias, plus tax reduction, plus debureaucratization equals more confidence, more investment, and more employment.”

Diplomats

On Friday (9), Jair Bolsonaro welcomed Argentine Ambassador Carlos Magariños, who was ed by Argentine Consul Cláudio Gutierrez.

The president-elect also met with representatives from the German Embassy. Argentina and add to other diplomatic visits entertained by Bolsonaro. In the last few days, he received officials from the government of the US, Italy, Spain, and China.
