Federal Judge Sergio Moro sentenced this Monday (Oct. 13) former Senator Gim Argello to 19 years in jail for the crimes of corruption, money laundering, and for obstructing Operation Car Wash investigations.

The Federal Prosecution Service has charged Argello of receiving bribes for not summoning contractors to testify in 2014 at the Congressional Committee of Inquiry (MI), which investigated irregularities at Petrobras. At the time, he was the vice-chairman of the committee.

In the sentence, the judge Moro said the former senator asked about $9.35 million and received at least $2.3 million from the contractors, which was used in his election campaign in 2014.

Contractor Ricardo Pessoa was also sentenced to 10 years and six months in jail and contractor Walmir Pinheiro was sentenced to nine years and eight months. They are both from UTC Engenharia construction company. Léo Pinheiro, from the OAS construction company, was sentenced to eight years and two months.

Argello had been on pre-trial detention since April 12, 2016, in a prison located at the metropolitan region of Curitiba.
