After learning of the suspension of the impeachment case against her during a ceremony Monday morning (May 9) at the Planalto presidential palace, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff urged her allies to act cautiously as she cannot as yet fathom how the move could unfold.
“I just heard that the process has been suspended, and it was no official announcement. I can't measure the consequences, so please act cautiously. We're facing a state of affairs fraught with cunning and guile. We'll only understand what's underway if we're mindful of how difficult it is and that we should come to with the situation in order to fight,” she argued.
Rousseff and her allies in both the cabinet and Congress learned of Waldir Maranhão's decision to invalidate the lower house sessions held on April 15, 16, and 17—in which the impeachment proceedings were allowed to advance—during a ceremony announcing the creation of five federal universities. The event was attended by students and education professionals, who, on hearing the news, shouted slogans of “there will be no coup, there will be fight,” “occupy and resist,” and “stay, dear.”
Rousseff also noted that what lies ahead is “a fierce dispute, filled with difficulties. I urge you, congress —and all of us—to stay calm and bear with it. There will be fight, and a good deal of struggle. My willingness to fight all the way till the end stems from having a clear mind. More than ever, we must now fight against the coup, against this process that amounted to my coup—which was utterly irregular. We shall always resist on behalf of democracy, follow a clear agenda, and trust the force we have when united,” she stated.
