The United Nations (UN) has announced the appointment of General José Luiz Jaborandy Júnior as Force Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). He will replace another Brazilian, Edson Leal Pujol. The announcement was made Tuesday (Mar. 13) by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Jaborandy Júnior is the tenth Brazilian general to hold the position. He ed the Army in 1976 and was a member of the United Nations Observer Group in Central America (ONUCA), in 1991. One year later, he ed the United Nations Observer Group in El Salvador (ONUSAL).
Brazil has been in charge of UN military force in Haiti since 2004, when the mission was established to stabilize the country, pacify and disarm guerrillas and rebels groups, promote free elections, and assist with the country's institutional and economic development.
As political stability and violence control strengthen in Haiti, the UN now works to gradually withdraw foreign military forces. In March 2013, the Brazilian government started downsizing its troops in the country, which currently consists of 1,200 military personnel.
