Former Brazilian football player Edson Arantes do Nascimento, commonly known as Pelé, 78, was itted to Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday (Apr. 9) in São Paulo after returning from Paris. He had been hospitalized in the French capital last Tuesday (3), with high fever.

On Friday (5), the star from Santos and the Brazilian national team wrote on his Twitter his state had improved. “Thank you for all the love! The antibiotics are working and the tests came out OK. I’m feeling much better and I think I’m ready to play again!” he tweeted.

As per a medical report released early on Tuesday afternoon, Pelé had an infection in his urinary tract caused by ureteric calculi. “The infection has been treated,” the note says, without getting into much detail. “Tests are being conducted and [the former player] shows a good health state,” the document reads.

History

Since the end of 2012, Pelé’s health state has kept friends, family , and fans concerned. In 2012 he had a prosthesis placed in his hips due to fibrosis. In 2014, he was hospitalized in São Paulo following urinary problems. Days after being discharged, he fell sick again and needed to return to hospital, and underwent hemodialysis.

In 2015, Pelé was taken to hospital twice to undergo more surgeries. In May, he had a procedure done on his prostrate. In July, he was subject to an operation to relieve him of back pain.

Health issues kept Pelé away from the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He had been eyed to light up the Olympic Torch, but said he was in no “physical conditions to participate.”

In the following year, Pelé attended the draw for the 2018 World Cup in Moscow in a wheelchair.
