The economic team and the Senate are committed to draw up a long-term agenda, addressing structural reforms and promoting a new cycle of job creation and investment, stated on Monday (Aug. 10) the finance minister Joaquim Levy.

In the afternoon, Levy and the minister of planning, Nelson Barbosa, attended a meeting with President of the Senate Renan Calheiros.

Eduardo Braga, Mines and Energy Minister, Edinho Silva, head of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency, and the senators Romero Juca and Eunício Oliveira, leader of the Democratic Movement Party in the Senate, also attended the meeting.

According to Levy, the discussion was very positive. "There has been collaboration to establish a longer-term agenda, necessary for the economy. We need to look not only the current moment, but where we want to go, what the necessary structural reforms are," noted the minister.

At the meeting, the minister received a document with several suggestions from the senators. He did not give details about the proposals. He only reported that they are about a post-tax adjustment agenda. Levy said that Renan Calheiros and other senators "have indicated that they are preparing the conditions for us to get at this new stage, moving firstly from the pure fiscal adjustment, to pick up some things we are doing and add it to a more formal agenda."

In Levy's view, in the coming days the government and the senators intend to establish an agenda to provide different perspectives to the private sector. "We want to send a medium-term signal, to give greater security and increase confidence in the economy. We want Brazil responding to changes with a more competitive economy and with more jobs." stated the minister.
